What is PLA?
The Portuguese Língua de Acolhimento (Welcoming Language) course is a certified program covering CEFR levels A1 + A2 (Elementary User) and B1 + B2 (Independent User), aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Designed for young people and adults whose first language is not Portuguese, this course offers more than just language instruction. It provides a comprehensive introduction to Portuguese language, culture, and customs, serving as a powerful tool for social integration, civic participation, and access to the labor market.
In addition, successful completion of this course is essential for applications related to:
Portuguese nationality
Permanent residence
Long-term resident status within Portugal
This program is both transformative, practical and IMMERSIVE, offering learners the linguistic and cultural skills needed to thrive in Portuguese society.
Course Requirements
To enroll in the PLA course, participants must provide the following documentation:
1. For those with a residence permit:
Valid Residence Permit (in accordance with Portuguese immigration law)
NIF – Tax Identification Number (Número de Identificação Fiscal)
2. If you do not have a residence permit:
One of the following:
Proof that the process to extend your stay or to apply/renew a residence permit has been started (comprovativo from SEF or AIMA) or
Proof of application for international protection or temporary protectionOne of the following:
NIF – Tax Identification Number
NISS – Social Security Identification NumberA copy of your passport page for identity verification

Certification for PLA Portuguese Lingua de Alcohimento Course
Upon completing the course successfully. They will be certified for the Portuguese Language Proficiency accordingly by the awarding body.
Certificates will be issued: in 2 weeks (Timing varies if there are National Holidays and the certifying entities are closed)
